Back to School: Worried About College Drinking?

With “Back to School” promotions going on throughout retail stores, parents also begin worrying about troublesome topics as their sons and daughters head out to college. It’s a fact that, in their first year, students are prone to party… A lot! Partying in the college scene means that students partake in heavy drinking, when truthfully they do not know how to control themselves. You probably have heard numerous stories of college kids blacking out from drinking and–in worse cases–going to the emergency room due to alcohol poisoning.
Parents who have daughters have more to worry about as you do not know what kind of trouble your daughter might get into when intoxicated. Fearing the worst, many paranoid mothers get birth control pills for their daughters. But taking a more proactive approach, how about instead of birth control, get them a breathalyzer this summer?
Although there is not much parents can do to prevent their children from drinking, they can prevent them from getting into trouble with the college or the police. Educating your child to not be in certain places at an oddly hour, or teaching them how to control themselves after drinking are ways to keep your kid safe and out of trouble. With breathalyzers, students are freely able to check how they or their friends are doing with their blood alcohol level. If they are smart enough, they will stop drinking after their safe limit.
Don’t be naive and think that your child will not go out drinking once school starts. If you are too trusting, there’s the worse possibility that your child might get into life-changing trouble. Preparing and educating your college-age children what to expect is smarter than assuming they are innocent teenagers. So buy a breathalyzer today!
